Do You Or A Loved One Suffer From Bruxism?
Do you frequently wake up with your jaw feeling tender and sore? Or do you often have headaches when you wake up in the morning? If so, you may be experiencing complications from a common condition known as bruxism. With bruxism, you clench and grind your teeth unconsciously, typically during sleep. It is not uncommon for a patient to be made aware of their problem at their routine hygiene examination appointment. Your teeth and mouth will show obvious signs that you clench and grind your teeth.
Signs of Bruxism
Some patients experience no signs or symptoms prior to their diagnosis, while others will have numerous symptoms that cause them great discomfort on a daily basis. If you experience any of the following warning signs, you may be experiencing a side effect of bruxism:
- Jaw or facial pain
- Cracked or chipped teeth
- Sensitivity to hot and cold
- Muscle tension in the jaw, face, or neck
- Headaches
- Popping or clicking of the jaw
What Causes Bruxism?
The cause of bruxism is not the same for each patient. Many adults experience bruxism due to unusually high stress and anxiety. When you feel stressed, your whole body, including your jaw, automatically tenses. As mentioned above, bruxism is diagnosed during a routine examination, and a treatment is then recommended. If you don’t get treatment, you may experience serious oral health complications, including cracked teeth.
