The health of your teeth and mouth is very important to your overall well-being. If you want to keep your smile looking and functioning its best for as long as possible, it is essential to brush and floss your teeth daily as well as visit your dentist for regular exams and cleanings. The American Dental Association recommends that you visit your dentist every six months to ensure that your teeth stay healthy and your smile stays beautiful.

Preventing Problems Before They Start
Regular dental exams and professional cleanings will:
The Exam
During your exam, your dentist will thoroughly examine your teeth and gums for signs of tooth decay, gum disease, and other health problems. They may also take X-rays to see what is happening beneath the surface of your teeth and gums.
Your Professional Cleaning
The dental hygienist will begin your cleaning by examining the surface of your teeth to determine if you have any cavities and check the quality of existing fillings. They will then perform a periodontal exam to make sure your gums adhere tightly to your teeth and check for signs of periodontal disease or bone loss. Next, the hygienist will carefully clean your teeth with a variety of tools to remove any hard mineral buildup (tartar). Then they will floss your teeth, use a polishing compound, and apply fluoride.
Getting a dental exam and professional cleaning is usually not at all painful. However, we understand that some patients may feel nervous about visiting the dentist for any reason. If you have any anxiety about your dental exam, please be sure to let us know. We have several sedation options available to ensure your comfort.
The Results
If during your exam or cleaning we find tooth decay or gum disease, we will talk to you about changing your brushing or flossing habits and may also recommend antibiotics or other dental treatments. If your teeth and gums appear to be healthy, we will probably tell you to continue your brushing and flossing routine as usual. Once your exam and cleaning are finished, we will help you schedule any follow-up appointments needed as well as your next cleaning. Then, you are free to go about the rest of your day and enjoy your sparkling, freshly cleaned smile!
