We know that many of our patients love Halloween, and we love hearing about all of the fun parties and costume ideas. One of the most popular aspects of this favorite holiday is the overabundance of candy and sweet treats. Here are some helpful tips to ensure you don’t experience any complications with your oral health. Keep reading to learn more.
Tips to Protect Your Teeth This Halloween
Here are some tips to help you enjoy sweet treats this Halloween while also protecting your teeth:
Choose Chocolate
If you’re planning to indulge in candy or sweet treats this Halloween season, we recommend choosing chocolate over sticky or chewy candies, such as taffy. While chocolate melts in your mouth and is less likely to stick to your teeth, chewy candies tend to linger on your teeth longer. These hard and sticky candies can also lead to broken teeth and pulled-out fillings.
Drink Water
If you’re going to eat candy, it’s best to follow it up with a glass of water. Drinking water is a healthy habit for several important reasons: it benefits your overall health and helps wash away food and bacteria from your mouth after eating. For that reason, we recommend drinking water after every meal or snack.
Eat Candy at Mealtimes
Every time you eat, bacteria is introduced into the mouth, often lingering long after mealtime. To keep those bacteria levels in check, we recommend brushing and flossing your teeth as often as possible throughout the day. We also suggest limiting the number of times you eat per day. When you enjoy a piece of candy or sweet treat right after mealtime, you’re reducing the amount of new bacteria being introduced into the mouth.
